Clumber Avenue: Highway Verge Stump Grinding

N&J Tree Services Ltd was instructed by Amey Highways to remove a tree stump located within the highway verge on Clumber Avenue, Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The works involved grinding the stump below ground level and leaving the area safe and tidy. Because of its highway location, particular consideration was given to potential underground services before stump grinding began.

Project Scope

The project required the stump to be progressively ground below ground level while managing the risks associated with its position within the highway verge. The work area also needed to be managed throughout the operation to protect pedestrians, highway users and surrounding property.

Utility Checks and Delivery

Before stump grinding commenced, all available statutory utility plans (STATS) were reviewed to identify known underground services within the working area.

The site was then scanned using CAT and Genny to assist in locating services and reduce the risk of accidental contact during grinding.

Mechanical Stump Grinding

Once these checks were complete, the stump was progressively ground below ground level using N&J's Carlton stump grinder.

The work area was appropriately managed throughout the operation to protect pedestrians, highway users and surrounding property.

Project Outcome

The stump was successfully removed without damage to underground services or surrounding infrastructure. The area was cleared and left safe and tidy.

The works were completed efficiently with minimal disruption to local residents and highway users.
